Founded in 1988, Heffernan Insurance Brokers is headquartered in Walnut Creek but has grown to include multiple offices in the North Bay. With continued expansion and a commitment to its clients, Heffernan has collected numerous accolades, and this year has snagged first place in the Best Insurance Brokerage category in the annual Best of the North Bay competition.
Heffernan originally represented niche-practice businesses in the nonprofit, construction, healthcare, transportation, hospitality, food, real estate and technology industries. The coverage has since expanded and now casts a much wider net, with offices coast-to-coast.
The insurance brokerage offers an array of services from business and personal insurance to employee benefits and financial services products. Brokers will also advise clients when it comes to creating a personalized plan for more financial stability.
With the current state of the insurance industry, clients are being asked to dig a bit deeper into their pockets. Chief Sales Officer and President of Personal Lines Liz Bishop shared with NorthBay biz how Heffernan has attempted to tackle this challenging insurance market.

Wildfire mitigation is a huge concern when it comes to the North Bay—and with offices in Petaluma and Napa, Heffernan is no stranger to the wine industry.
“We have a large wine book, and we have a wildfire mitigation contractor that we have a strong relationship with, and it’s made a big difference in our ability to help our clients get insurance,” says Bishop.
Along with a dedication to its client base, Heffernan Insurance also has a commitment to philanthropy. Last year in honor of the business’s 35th anniversary, Heffernan raised $2.5 million for local nonprofits in the areas of its branch offices.
“That money is going to go directly back into the communities that we work and live in,” says Bishop. “For the size company we are, for us to be able to raise that significant amount of money to go back into the community and help serve those less fortunate, I’m extremely proud of that.”
