This summer, I had the opportunity to visit Bordeaux, a port city in southwestern France and a famed wine-growing region. Compared to Bordeaux, we’re only beginning to write our story. California is considered the “new world” in the world of wine, and our history is long and storied, but we are hundreds of years behind our friends from the old world. So, why do I love Sonoma County so much?
During the first part of September, as summer comes to a close, there is still one place that offers a world-class quintessential wine-and-arts weekend—the almost-impossible-to-describe beautiful Mendocino County coast, which is home one of our favorite events. This is the perfect time for a visit from the North Bay area, and a celebration of autumn. Yet it is Winesong that draws us there each year.
Morale is down. Rumors are flying. Everyone seems to be unhappy, but nobody wants to step forward and talk about it. So how do you turn that around?
Begin with a more restorative approach to your workplace environment, based on attributes of inclusion, equity, mutual respect and personal accountability.
Legalization and the regulated market present an opportunity for existing cannabis businesses to emerge from the shadows, for new operators to enter the marketplace, and for a variety of professionals and ancillary business to serve the bourgeoning cannabis industry. While the cannabis industry faces an array of regulatory issues including permitting, licensing and compliance requirements, the field is wide open for those looking to get in on the ground floor. Here is an overview of current trends in the emerging market place, the future of banking for the industry, and the North Bay’s position of leadership in the industry.
Chances are when you were growing up, your mother reminded you to stand up straight. Turns out, she was right. The importance of posture as it relates to health and well-being can’t be overstated. In the short term, good posture contributes to a better appearance. Long term, good posture is beneficial to your health in ways you might not expect—from improving oxygen consumption to maintaining good strong bones.
Growing up in a Marine Corps family during the ’50s and the ’60s, I attended six different elementary schools and three different high schools. By the time I graduated from Stuttgart American High School in Ludwigsburg, Germany, I was a disgruntled student, not very connected to the educational process, and certainly, not very connected to my teachers. The young “me” never could have imagined myself as a future teacher. And so, what a surprise, when I first left the practice of law and walked into a classroom filled with Cardinal Newman students. I felt as though my true self emerged. All those years after completing my secondary education, I’d never seriously entertained the thought of teaching.
A study of women-owned businesses conducted by the Sonoma County Economic Development Board last year, revealed that 90 percent of these businesses listed the firm’s proprietor as the sole employee. While many of these business owners are content to maintain their business at this level, others are looking to grow.
Picture a leisurely trip to the wine store to purchase a bottle of WXYZ Zinfandel. Your clerk says he would be happy to get it for you, but asks whether you prefer the entry level, the Estate, a Reserve, or an Old Vines. Since the price of each category is higher than the last, your simple trip to buy a bottle for burger night is no longer so easy. Should you pay the extra money? Is each wine truly better than the one named before? And, maybe the most important question, “Even if each bottle is somewhat better, is the more expensive one worth the price differential?”
