Higher Vision
You are all invited to this summer's hottest new music event, Higher Vision, a one-day grassroots
Sonoma County Fairgrounds
Event Description

Higher Vision is a one-day grassroots "Community Activation and Awareness Gathering" featuring the return to Northern California of reggae superstar Burning Spear for the first time in years! The festival will treat guests to a unique experience with a diverse selection of top touring artists, including 2012 Grammy Winners for Best World Music Album, Tinariwen. Also on the bill are electro-funk masters The Motet performing their highly acclaimed Grateful Dead tribute: Funk is Dead, international Dub sound wizard GAUDI, Fanna-Fi-Allah Sufi Qawwali, local favorites the Jug Dealers and Ali Weiss, and much more. Speakers include Kevin Danaher, founder of Global Exchange and The Green Festival, and Foster and Kimberly Gamble, producers of the groundbreaking new documentary Thrive. There will be sustainable and progressive vendors, gourmet and organic food, and environmental awareness education in a fun, family-friendly setting at the Somoma County Fairgrounds, known for hosting quality music events.

Get ready for our Funkalicious Showcase with THE MOTET performing their highly acclaimed GRATEFUL DEAD TRIBUTE: FUNK IS DEAD, and Bender's MJFunk Dance Party.  And in Kraft Hall, our Sacred Music Showcase will feature a rare performance by GAUDI:  "DUB QAWWALI", a live tribute to the late great NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN, and FANNA-FI-ALLAH Sufi Qawwali, blessed to be the foremost disciples of the greatest Qawwali masters of PakistanDoors to the night shows open at 9:30pm on Saturday June 9, at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

GAUDI presents "DUB QAWWALI", a live tribute to the late great NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Considered a legend both in and outside of his home country, Nusrat was dubbed the ‘Elvis of the East’ and the ‘Bob Marley of Pakistan’, and travelled the world promoting his unique brand of music inspired by the mystical faith of Sufism.

So, what happens when you unite one of world’s most revered voices with a long-time veteran of global music production? DUB QAWWALI, a moving body of work that respectfully brings Khan’s Qawwali songs together with Jamaican dub via superb 21st century studio techniques. Using recently discovered and rare vocal parts recorded in sessions in Pakistan in the late 60s and 70s, GAUDI pays fitting tribute to the master vocalist with inspiring arrangements. Blending the chilled out tempos of reggae with Qawwali’s spiritually rousing lyrics, he creates a surprisingly successful harmony in Dub Qawwali.

Gaudi, aware of the enormity of re-working such a prolific and globally respected artist was moved to comment: “After 3 decades of music activity I have to say that this is one of the most important productions I have ever done.” This will be the first time that Gaudi has performed this critically praised tribute in the United States and we are honored to showcase it.

THE MOTET: FUNK IS DEAD: The Motet will be paying tribute to the music of one of the most influential rock bands of all time: THE GRATEFUL DEAD, in their over the top funkalicious showcase, Funk Is Dead. Having sold out every Funk is Dead show they've done so far, we are certain that this going to go down as the most exciting and creative Motet performance to date!

Fanna-Fi-Allah will bring the magic of Pakistani Qawwali to the west in its traditional form as part of our Sacred Music Showcase. Two years ago Fanna Fi Allah achieved an unprecedented breakthrough when Amina (the female tabla player for Fanna Fi Allah) received permission to participate in one of the largest annual Pakistani music festivals, commemorating the death of Sufi saint Data Hajveri. “It was the first time in 670 years that a woman was permitted to perform,” Tahir explains.  Rounding out our Funkalicious Showcase is Bender's MJFunk Dance Party.
