Redwood Credit Union (RCU) is hosting a free document shredding and information security event for the community, Saturday, August 18th from 8 am to 1 pm at their Administrative Offices located at 3033 Cleveland Avenue in Santa Rosa. Document shredding services will be provided by Shred-It and Integrity Shred, and e-waste recycling will be provided by Computer Recycling Center (CRC).
The event will also feature a free educational seminar titled Credit & Debit Card Fraud: What to Look Out For. The seminar begins at 10:30 am and is in English, but bilingual resources will also be available for Spanish-speaking attendees. All seminar attendees will be entered into a drawing for a personal shredder. For questions related to the seminar, or to register, email email@example.com or call (707) 576-5259. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a canned food donation to benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank (REFB). Canned food donors at the event will also be entered into a drawing for a personal shredder.
“Identity theft and fraud can happen to anyone, but there are preventative measures consumers can take to protect their personal financial information and reduce their chances of becoming victims,” said RCU President & CEO Brett Martinez. “We offer the annual Shred-a-Thon to provide the community a safe and secure means to dispose of sensitive documents and recycle e-waste at no charge, as well as an opportunity to learn, in our seminar, how they can take further action to avoid falling victim to identity theft, phishing and fraud.”
One of the easiest and most effective precautions against identity theft is to shred documents that contain sensitive data, such as outdated financial statements, canceled checks, credit card offers, pay stubs and other old documents containing personal information. Attendees may bring up to 3 banker-sized boxes of documents for shredding. Acceptable items for e-waste recycling include computer components (CPUs, monitors, printers, ink cartridges), small office equipment (copiers, fax machines, typewriters) and personal electronics (cell phones, CD and DVD players, televisions, radios).
