Gallery Bergelli
Event Description

Gallery Bergelli is pleased to present Endless Summer - a group exhibition featuring new paintings by early career female painters Amy Lincoln, Emma Webster, Helena Wurzel, and Anna Valdez. The show will open on September 4th and will continue through October 16th, 2014. The opening reception will be held on September 4th from 6-8pm.

Endless Summer conveys a continuation of the summer heat expressed through the hot hues and fluorescent palettes that run throughout the pieces in the show. In California, summer tends to linger and this provokes a desire for outdoor adventures, leisure, and play. The works in this show illustrate this spirit. This exhibition is the culmination of various experiences as seen through the lenses of these women painters.

Helena Wurzel depicts scenes of summertime ease with women swimming in pools of cool deep blues and snapshots of women lounging in the sun on a patterned blanket. Emma Webster's Hawaii series explores the essence of water and movement. Amy Lincoln brings her viewers to imagined desert spaces of deep reds and blooming cacti. Anna Valdez freshly invigorates still life with the subjects of picnic essentials atop a colorful, tribal-print blanket, featuring an open Elmore Leonard novel, a partly eaten sandwich, and a plate of strawberries. Collectively, these works capture the feeling of an endless summer.

Emma Webster's paintings are about the eventual distancing between people - the slow separation where the ones we love most become unknowable. Though her works' forms and landscapes are relatively abstracted, the pieces portray a pervasively human narrative. Webster is a recent graduate of Stanford University (2011, BA in Art Practice), though she also studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, l'École d'Art Plastique in Paris, and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Emma currently lives and works in Oakland.

Helena Wurzel creates paintings focused on the female form and female relationships. "I make paintings about the stories of women. I depict images of myself, and my girlfriends in intimate moments of self-reflection and celebration." Wurzel relies on color and form to emotionally charge her paintings. She was born in Newton, MA in 1980 and received her undergraduate degree from Brown University in 2003 and her MFA from Boston University in 2007. The artist lives and works in Cambridge, MA.

Amy Lincoln is a New York-based artist working in painting, drawing, and collage medium. Her work often depicts plants, indoor and outdoor spaces, and people. She has shown her work throughout the United States in cities such as New York, Boston, and Portland, Oregon, as well as internationally in Tokyo, Paris, and Beijing. Lincoln moved to New York in 2006 upon receiving a Swing Space residency from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. She received an MFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, and a BA in Studio Art from the University of California, Davis. In 2012 she was awarded a residency at the Inside Out Art Museum in Beijing, China. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Anna Valdez incorporates articles from her home, such as plants, fabrics, vessels and records into her work as a form of self-representation. She understands the domestic sphere as emblematic of personal and collective experience. Valdez received her BA from UC Davis in 2009 and an MFA in painting from Boston University in 2013. Her work has recently been exhibited at Masur Museum of Art, the Danforth Museum, Boston University Art Galleries, and Gallery Bergelli. In 2014, Valdez was awarded a solo exhibition at the Sanchez Art Center, scheduled for the spring of 2015. Valdez's work has been featured in New American Paintings, and Daily Serving
