Part of the 5th Annual Wine County Ragtime Festival

The 5th annual Wine County Ragtime Festival , organized by Bay Area ragtime music aficionados Jim Smith and John Partridge, will feature a special Ragtime Romp at Jack’s Place at Jack London State Historic Park on Saturday October 11. From 11 am to 3 pm, the Park will be transformed into a musical jam session party with ragtime musicians performing all around the Park as families picnic, play games, participate in a period costume contest and enjoy the music.

This party atmosphere will hearken back to the days when Jack and Charmian London threw great parties where they and their guests no doubt enjoyed ragtime music, which was the “pop” music of their day.

The rousing popular Wine Country Ragtime Festival, has grown from one concert presented in a Church in Napa to a two-day weekend festival celebrating ragtime music, a distinctive American style developed in the mid 1800’s as a fusion of European Salon piano music, African syncopations and

marching band music. It rapidly developed in the red light districts along the Mississippi and Missouri river systems.  the 1890's it had spread to the big cities and a “ragtime craze” swept the country and eventually Europe and Latin America. This period is known as the "Golden Age of Ragtime" and was highlighted by the likes of Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb and James Scott — the "Big Three" ragtime composers of that era.

Although jazz and other forms of popular music eventually overshadowed ragtime, it has never disappeared and remains a significant and characteristic American music style. Today there are hundreds of ragtime performers, dozens of festivals around the country and a large number of new rags are being written every year. The Wine Country Ragtime Festival is dedicated to preserving and sharing ragtime music with all music lovers.

The performers for the Ragtime Romp at Jack’s Place will include musicians from the Bay Area and around the country. A complete list of the musicians is available online at

Ragtime Romp at Jack’s Place will also feature games for kids young and old, antique wooden toys and a costume contest as well as a barbecue (sponsored by the Montgomery Village Lions Club) featuring a variety of sausages, hot dogs and drinks available for purchase; or bring you own picnic.

Ragtime Romp is at Jack London State Historic Park, 2400 London Ranch Road in Glen Ellen.
