Event Description

Selected from the vast graphic art collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, our exhibit, Andy Warhol to Kara Walker: Picturing the Iconic, started out as a selection of Pop Art, the content expanded to encompass a broad range of imagery dating from the late 1960s through the present. The idea wasn’t simply to show just the “iconic” but also to play off the idea of what it means (in pop culture or even in semiotics) to be Iconic or by contrast anti-iconic.  It was also to show various ways that artists use humor to get at darker issues about politics, religion, and Western culture.

In her talk, Jennifer Bethke, will explore the pop artists represented in the exhibit. She will discuss the use of American iconic imagery in their art and will briefly touch on recent related artistic developments.

Jennifer Bethke is an art historian and freelance curator, who teaches art history at Sonoma State University.  She specializes in modern art, though she has written on subjects as wide-ranging as contemporary landscape painting and the history of photography.
