Hike into Fall

with naturalist John Lynch at

October 25

Examine the changing season with park naturalist John Lynch on an autumn ramble to the ancient Redwood and Fern Lake. John will identify the variety of oaks that live along this trail, point out "oak apples", and "flying saucer" galls. Learn about "Acorn Time" and the importance of oaks as a key stone species in the Valley of The Moon. He will alert you to the "waka waka" of acorn woodpeckers and point out their black and white plumage and bright red crowns as they busily harvest the seasons’ abundant acorns. With Halloween around the corner, this is a timely hike to explore different kinds of spider webs, and learn about our local bats.

This moderate 8-mile roundtrip hike is appropriate for all ages. Bring binoculars, a camera, water, lunch and wear appropriate shoes. Fee for the hike, limited to 12 participants, is $15 (which includes parking) so advance reservation is required.
