Event Description

For over 30 years, Kurt Kemp and Mark Perlman have been collaborating and pursuing their own careers simultaneously during their tenure at Sonoma State University. In addition to exhibiting their own works (Kurt’s being prints and Mark’s being encaustic paintings), they have combined their aesthetics to build a third hybrid of mixed media works encompassing the two bodies of work. The work they are currently exhibiting at the Museums of Sonoma County are examples of work that they have completed over the years. During this talk they will discuss their collaborative efforts and what it is like to work together:

“In the past we have shown our own work together along with our collaborative efforts as well as the collaborative works by themselves. Over the years we have attempted to bring a new freshness to each body of work that we work on together. There are times when we are both working simultaneously and then trade several times throughout the day to complete the work.

There has seldom been an episode where we disagree or become territorial over the work we each contribute. There is complete trust in each other and it is only at the end of the process that we edit and discriminate between the works that we wish to exhibit. Kurt has the patience and imagination that gives the work a matter of descriptive draftsmanship while I tend toward a free expression of the process of working more abstractly while depending a great deal on my instinctual means of working.
