|Cartoon Drawing Workshop with Brian Fies|
Brian Fies will talk about why comics are a great medium and guide you through creating a very short comic that will give you the confidence and techniques to continue on your own
History Museum of Sonoma County
Comics are a storytelling medium that combines words and pictures to convey more meaning than either words or pictures could alone. You don’t have to be a great artist to be a great cartoonist. It’s the story that matters, and comics are especially well-suited to tell intimate stories about characters and their lives: history, biography, memoir. In this workshop, cartoonist Brian Fies (Mom’s Cancer, A Fire Story) will talk about why comics are a great medium for telling your story, and guide you through creating a (very) short comic that will give you the confidence and techniques to continue on your own.
Brian Fies is a writer and cartoonist whose past projects include the graphic novels Mom’s Cancerand Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow, and the webcomic The Last Mechanical Monster. The day after Brian and his wife, Karen, lost their home in the Tubbs fire, Brian bought paper and pens, and began writing and drawing A Fire Story. Posted online, the comic went viral, and was seen by more than 3 million people. Brian is expanding A Fire Story into a full-length graphic novel to be published by Abrams in spring 2019.
Brian’s work in comics has received several honors, including the comic industry’s Eisner and Harvey awards as well as the American Astronautical Society’s Eugene M. Emme Award. In June 2018, an animated version of his original Fire Story produced by San Francisco PBS station KQED won an Emmy Award.
