Event Description

New Century Chamber Orchestra opens its 2018-2019 season with debut performances by British violinist Anthony Marwood. A renowned interpreter of contemporary music, Marwood leads New Century as guest concertmaster for the U.S. Premiere of Seavaigers for Violin, Accordion and Strings by British composer Sally Beamish, featuring Scottish accordion pioneer James Crabb in his Bay Area debut. Marwood also takes to the stage as soloist in Concerto for Violin and Strings, \\\'Distant Light\\\' by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks with Dvorak\\\'s classic Serenade for Strings in E Major, Op. 22 rounding off the program.
With influences steeped in traditional Scottish music, Sally Beamish\\\'s extensive catalogue of works have been premiered and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Houston Ballet and Amsterdam Sinfonietta, among others. Originally written for fiddle and Scottish harp, Seavaigers was revised for violin and accordion by Marwood and Crabb and premiered in October 2017 by Les Violins du Roy with whom Marwood serves as Principal Artistic Partner. This three-movement work reflects on the beauty of the North Sea waters between Shetland and Dundee and is steeped in improvisational Celtic tradition. Highly sought-after Scottish accordion virtuoso James Crabb performs all over the world and has collaborated frequently with Beamish. He appears as soloist on the composer\\\'s critically acclaimed CD The Singing (2015) which The Times (U.K.) praised as "Atmospheric, keenly felt and expertly played by all."
An extensive repertoire of works has been written specifically for Marwood including Thomas Ades\\\'s Violin Concerto "Concentric Paths" (2005) and Sally Beamish\\\'s Violin Concerto (1995). This performance marks his first return to the Bay Area since 2014 appearances with Berkeley Symphony and San Francisco Performances.
