Bringing Big Ideas to the World

A Sonoma group, spearheaded by mother-daughter team Carole Peccorini and Chalon Bridges, wants to empower North Bay women to create their own big, bold ideas through initiating a nine-month speaker series, “Awakening Your Legacy – Big Ideas and Rich Conversations with North Bay Women.”

Beginning February 24 and each fourth Wednesday through October, “big idea” speakers will relate the inspiration that became their passion and personal destiny.  The series venue is Ramekins Event Center in Sonoma where a freshly prepared dinner by the chef will be served. The evening program will conclude with conversations among table guests to support dormant dreams which might lead to big ideas.

Leading off the series on February 24, Heidi Kuhn will relate the story of her inspiration in September, 1997 to create Roots of Peace, dedicated to the removal of landmines worldwide.  With a simple toast in her living room to go from “Mines to Vines,” this stay-at-home mom took up landmine eradication following the death of Princess Diana, who had catapulted the issue to the forefront of world opinion.

Kuhn sought the support of more than 400 California vintners, including legendary Robert Mondavi, Mike Grgich, and Diane Disney Miller to turn her ideas into reality and transform “seeds of terror” into “seeds of hope.”

Her vision has transformed lethal minefields into bountiful vineyards in Afghanistan.

“The economy of Afghanistan is 80 percent based on agriculture,” Kuhn says. “This was once dubbed the Garden of Asia and we are helping to bring it back,”

Her daughter Kyleigh Kuhn created their Pennies for Peace with kids, which has raised more than 30 million pennies – $300,000 – and now operates more than 100 schools and soccer fields in Afghanistan where the children are safe from deadly landmines.

Kuhn tells the story of a little boy who asked, “Mrs. Kuhn, are you really from California?”  He paused after Heidi nodded, and then raised his chin.  “Is it true that the children in California can hike in mountains and run on beaches without fear of landmines beneath their shoes?”  Heidi nodded again.  “It must be heaven,” he said.

A fifth generation descendent of a Marin county family, Kuhn is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, a cancer survivor and married for over 25 years with four children.  Her work is recognized by world leaders and organizations around the globe.

Following the talk, guests will participate in a guided conversation about the possibilities that may be stirring in their own lives, including those fresh ideas they perhaps didn’t know they had.

Deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 15.  The program and dinner begin at 5:45 p.m. with a cash bar and end at 9:30 p.m.  $60 per person, $62 online. Ramekins, 450 W. Spain St., Sonoma. Register by contacting Carole Peccorini at 707.996.2167 or online at sonomabigideas.blogspot.com
